A growing trend in the health & fitness industry is for facilities to “re-brand” by providing more specialized services for their members. Even clubs with large memberships can make each member feel like they are able to get personalized attention so that they can reach their fitness goals.

In fact, it is imperative fitness facilities consider this option if they want to retain members. 

"More segmentation will occur, forcing the positioning of clubs away from the plain-vanilla facilities with no clear points of differentiation. This process will be pressured with greater competition from a variety of other facilities, including university fitness centers, corporate fitness centers and, to a lesser extent, member-owned private clubs, municipal recreation centers, nonprofits and medical fitness centers." – Rick Caro, President of Management Vision, Inc.

Statistics show that by 2030 nearly half of American adults will be obese while only about 16% of adults are gym members. In order to fight this epidemic, there will need to be more options for patrons.

Potential clients will need to feel motivated, have a target goal with action steps to reach it, and be able to track their progress. Being able to work with a fitness professional can definitely be a first and important step in the journey to becoming healthy. I strongly advise that a detailed dieting service be established to assist members in all of those facets. Large gyms that can not specialize in just yoga, pilates, etc can still stay competitive with detailed dieting and their members will greatly benefit. All facilities should find a way to include this in their facility operations in order to stay ahead of the curve.

The numbers are out there:

  • 62%of internet users go to social network sites such as Facebook or LinkedIn
  • 15% of users log into this site and use health related content while
  • 68% said they would not share personal health information on a social networking site such as Facebook. 

Do these numbers surprise you? Plenty of people are logging in but fewer people are using social networking sites to receive health related content or even interact with their personal trainers. Some people believe it may be due to privacy issues and a certain level of comfort. The graphic at the end of this post contains the data above & more insight on research done about the health & fitness industry and social media.

Professionals in the industry are looking toward to using Google+ to rejuvenate their social media engagement attempts with clients. While I’m not completely certain how Google+ could be used at the facility level currently (business pages will be introduced soon), many personal trainers are trying to use it to put their clients in circles so that you can share content specifically focused on them, monitor their daily habits (is your client checking in at Dunkin Donuts twice a day or twitpic-ing delicious desserts they’ve ordered?), and more.

Personally, I don’t think Google+ is a viable option.

People are buzzing about how its current decline in usage. Some blogs think the decline is ultimately about engagement issues — users are reluctant to share information in such a public forum. As in, the same issue the health & fitness industry has with Facebook!  If Google+ general users can’t surpass this issue like they would on other social networking sites, how can the health & fitness industry do so?

Ultimately, I strongly believe it is the responsibility of facilities to create their own social, community based environment around their company culture. What does this mean? Facilities need to adapt by providing a more enhanced, fully integrated social media experience for their membership where clients can do everything from create blog posts to share content with like-minded individuals, have access to their workout history, interact with their personal trainers, view facility announcements and more. Facilities could and should interact with their clients on a personal level without having to bombard other social outlets where people feel less comfortable viewing their content. Users could log in to their favorite facilities social community for the customized health content they want and are seeking.

Gamification, badgification, whatever lingo you have attributed to using game-like features such as a reward system, points, and badges to motivate action are popping up on the health & fitness radar. You are probably familiar with Wii Fit, Kinect Fitness, etc. but how about the same concept (making fitness fun by combining it with a game) on your mobile device. Is this a fad or the future of fitness technology?

You can run away from zombies or climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It’s your choice and your fitness goal. 

Personally, I am under the strong belief that gamification can work for the health & fitness industry because (1) people want fitness to be more fun, (2) people need to be motivated to be successful at achieving their fitness goals, and (3) gamification provides a type of “instant reward”.  To develop that thought a little further, after doing 100 crunches you won’t see a beer gut instantly turn into rock hard six pack abs. However, with gamification there are points, virtual prizes / rewards, and more. 

Other benefits include (but are not limited to):

  • community features 
  • daily challenges
  • ways to track/log food and fitness activities

Now, I understand the critics that say that the games may lead to the user wanting to play with their phone instead of working out or even that virtual rewards may not motivate people for too long. I believe with further integration, these concepts will not only work for the health & fitness industry but improve some user’s perceptions to believe exercise can be fun.

Previously, we looked at how high tech pads & helmets could assist health care professionals in diagnosing and preventing concussions.

Just in case you need some numbers to put it into perspective: The Center for Disease Control & Prevention estimates almost 4 million sports-related brain injuries occur each year, many going undiagnosed or untreated, with at least 250,000 concussions occurring in high school football every year. 

Luckily, fitness technology and its spectrum of high tech health related “gadgets” are assisting people through identification, monitoring, and tracking data that can help prevent diseases. This high tech mouth guard works by reporting post-direct impact information from the mouth guard to an external source such as a mobile phone or PC.

Built into the mouth guard are accelerometers and a gyroscopic that monitors time, g force, and even the amount of head rotation during contact sports like football, hockey and lacrosse.

This is a valuable resource because it allows fitness professionals to make better informed decisions based on data received; they can decide if/when to allow the player back on the field or a plan of action for the injury sustained. What makes this most interesting is that the data is sent to mobile phones or PC — a growing trend in the fitness world. Fitness professionals such as personal trainers are able to use their personal devices to receive real-time data and assist their clients. Wouldn’t you love for this type of technology to be available not just on the field but in the gym while you train? This idea is not very far-fetched and could mobilize the industry to improve the experience of health & fitness enthusiasts at every level. 

While this device is still fairly new (has not been released for commercial use or FDA approved) it shows a lot of promise for the development of devices that feature immediate feedback to fitness professionals.

Do you use Skype to catch up with family across the country? Now, you may be able to use skype to train with a fitness professional. A growing trend within the fitness community revolves around trainers offering their services through skype which allows clients to: save money on gas/travel, enjoy the privacy of their own home, have necessary interaction that may be lacking by using DVDs and diet websites.

What does this mean for facility owners? Increased competition.

To be honest, I think this is a fabulous idea. I know some people out there in fitnessland are probably rolling their eyes, thinking people are becoming lazier but in reality, virtual training can be a great asset.

1. It provides people with one-on-one support. A trainer will be able to guide their client through the workout and since they will be able to SEE them, they can also let their client know if they are doing the exercise correctly, etc. 

2. It allows people to connect with personal trainers at “off-times”. For those who enjoy 24 hour gyms because of the flexibility in time, this would still allow them the option to have a personal trainer. These people would not have to disrupt their already jam-packed schedules too much (remember: packed schedules usually means less time to work out!) and will still enjoy the health benefits of having a professional assist them. 

3. It allows for future fitness innovation. Let’s be honest — SKYPE is an offspring of the various technologies that fitness lovers are using whether it is on their ipad, iphone, android, online, etc. Virtual training can increase the numbers of personal trainers demanded, which can (a) assist facilities in understanding what services to provide to their members  and (b) help facilities catch up with the technological advances the industry is dealing with.

It’s becoming a common sentiment that many people know that exercise is important for their health & well-being but many people do not feel motivated to work-out. Personally, I love that it is pretty much like a game and counts walking, climbing stairs and more as exercise. The downside I could see to this is that I’m the type of person that puts their keys down & loses them or much worse, this cute fitness device could become scratched and damaged trying to survive my everyday routine. However, maybe the game rewards and more will actually promote keeping my keys near as well as being healthy and staying fit! The charity feature is unique and provides an added motivation to using this product.
